Title: Performance Prediction of Centrifugal Impellers and Scale Effects

Abstract: It is as yet difficult to predict the full-range performance curves of turbomachinery with sufficient accuracy in spite of the recent remarkable progress in the flow analysis technique. The present study is aimed to improve the conventional performance prediction method of centrifugal impellers, and the new formulae of shock loss, friction loss and mixing loss are proposed deduced from the numerically calculated results of the quasi-three-dimensional analysis of impeller flow together with those of the viscous flow analysis of impeller outlet flow. The influences of reverse flow induced at the impeller entrance and at the exit are taken into account. The quasi-three-dimensional flow analysis is also improved to obtain stable solutions for the wide range of flow-rates. The present prediction method was applied to two types of centrifugal impellers and the comparison of the predicted head curve with the measured one showed its validity. The loss formulae presented here give much different results from those of conventional theories except for the best efficiency point. The influence of the Reynolds number on the head curve is also determined and the scale effect is discussed.
