Abstract: The frictionless flow in volutes of 'two-dimensional logarithmic spiral is theoretically analyzed to determine the flow characteristics at off-design conditions . The first approximate solutions are obtained using a simplified flow-model based on the assumption that total head is constant around an impeller. The flow in the radial space between the impeller exit and the volute inlet is further analyzed using the obtained results and the Busemann's impeller outlet conditions. In the next step the method modifying the first approximate solutions is developed with the total head variation around an impeller taken into account. For application to the other forms of spiral the simple modification method is also presented for rough estimation of the volute characteristics. The comparison of the calculated results with the measured data from the literatures showed satisfactory agreement in the wide range of flow-rates. The analytical solutions obtained are expressed in relatively simple forms and are convenient to evaluate the effects of various design parameters of volutes.
